Despair and grief are in all our hearts as we are witnessing the unfolding of a painful natural disaster in Turkey, Syria and their neighbouring countries. A 7.8 magnitude earthquake has brought bitterness, misery and confusion as the cumulative death toll has crossed more than 36,000. Several tens of thousands have been left either injured or displaced. The numbers that are being made known as a result of continuous evacuation efforts have been startling, and the news reports are giving us a distanced, yet, raw glimpse of the murky conditions.

Homes have been wrecked, lives have been lost and there is widespread chaos. The economic cost is huge, forecasted to surpass $4 billion. Sahayata Trust has a very prompt relief and recovery program during times of emergencies which it seeks to utilize during this tough time for its brothers and sisters who are suffering in these countries. The Trust is committed to raising rupees fifty lakhs as humanitarian aid to those affected by this unfathomable disaster.

The Trust is working closely with the Turkish Consulate. We have been made aware that these regions are going through a severe health emergency. On an immediate basis, we have already pledged 200 blood pressure apparatuses and 50 cylinders. The Consulate has provided a list of medical equipment they need which will provide relief to the victims, such as ventilators, ECG machines, ultrasound devices, hospital beds, nebulizers, etc.
